Fundamental Rights: An Obligation the Government Must Fulfill

Many people don’t believe they have the right to a decent life, a respectable job, quality healthcare in a timely manner, justice within a reasonable time frame, or to feel safe when things go wrong. However, rights are rights, not favors. It is the responsibility of those in power, the government, to ensure these basic needs are met. No one asks a president to take charge of a country, they are the ones who fight to reach the presidency and take on that responsibility.

We should learn to demand what is rightfully ours. Constitutions in many countries enshrine these rights, yet they are often ignored. If we don’t have access to what is essential for a dignified life, why shouldn’t we demand that those in charge provide what we need? We should hold them accountable for neglect whenever our basic needs are not met. It’s time for governments to be held responsible.
