Believing that we live in a society managed by the state is idealism. In practice, states follow the rules of the market because they depend on it for resources and stability. The market does not want democrats. It wants consumers. And those who control the market are the ones with capital. That is why politics adapts to the logic of consumption rather than to the popular will.
